Singapore in December 2026: Weather, Events, Worth It?
Singapore in December is a good trip from Hong Kong, as long as you go in the first half of the month and plan around the rain. Expect daytime highs of around 30 to 31°C and overnight lows of around 23 to 25°C, with December among the wettest months of the year in Meteorological Service Singapore's long-term climate records.
That is the trade. You swap Hong Kong's cool, dry December for tropical heat, Christmas lights on Orchard Road and a short storm most afternoons. The first two weeks are calmer and cheaper. From around 18 December to New Year, Singapore is in full peak season.
What are the real numbers for Singapore in December 2026?
Singapore's December weather is hot, humid and wet, with temperatures that barely move from day to night. Daytime highs sit around 30 to 31°C and nights rarely drop below 23°C, according to Meteorological Service Singapore's climate normals. The sea around Sentosa and East Coast Park stays bathwater warm, in the high 20s Celsius.
December falls in the wet phase of the Northeast Monsoon. The Northeast Monsoon is the seasonal wind pattern that runs from roughly December to early March and brings Singapore its heaviest rain in the first half of that period. Most days give you a dry morning and a thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening. A few times a season a monsoon surge (a burst of stronger northeasterly winds) brings a day or two of steady rain and cooler, grey weather.
Daylight is about 12 hours, as it is all year this close to the equator. Sunrise is around 7am and sunset around 7pm, which feels generous after Hong Kong's early December dusk.
The holidays that shape the month:
- Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, is a public holiday in Singapore, according to the Ministry of Manpower's 2026 list.
- New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is also a public holiday in Singapore.
- 25 and 26 December 2026 are general holidays in Hong Kong, according to the Hong Kong government's 2026 holiday list. With Christmas on a Friday, that makes a long weekend in Hong Kong.
- Singapore's school year-end holidays run from late November to the end of December, according to the Ministry of Education's school terms. Local families fill attractions all month, not just at Christmas.
- Hong Kong school Christmas holidays typically cover the last week or so of December. Exact dates vary by school, so check the Education Bureau's school calendar if you are travelling with children.
Two back-to-back Friday holidays (Christmas and New Year) are exactly what pushes Hong Kong to Singapore flights up in late December.
Fares: December fares on the Hong Kong to Singapore route are not tracked by singaporehongkong.com yet, so we are not going to guess a number. Our fare calendar for both directions will show the cheapest month and day once tracking starts. Until then, departures between 1 and 15 December are your best bet for reasonable prices, and anything leaving Hong Kong on 23 to 25 December or returning on 1 to 3 January will cost you more.
Hotels: the site has no tracked December hotel prices for Singapore either. Rates climb through December and peak over New Year's Eve, especially for rooms around Marina Bay with a view of the fireworks. Our hotel price guide for a first stay is the place to compare areas.
How does Singapore in December compare with Hong Kong?
Singapore in December is around 10°C warmer than Hong Kong and much wetter, so treat it as a summer trip, not a winter one. Here's the side-by-side, based on long-term climate norms from Meteorological Service Singapore and the Hong Kong Observatory.
| December | Singapore | Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime high (°C) | around 30 to 31 | around 19 to 21 |
| Night low (°C) | around 23 to 25 | around 14 to 16 |
| Rain | heavy, afternoon storms, monsoon surges | mostly dry, sunny |
| Sea temperature (°C) | high 20s | low 20s |
| Daylight (hours) | about 12 | about 11 |
| Public holidays | 25 Dec | 25 and 26 Dec |
| School holidays | late Nov to end Dec | roughly last week of Dec |
| Season | peak from mid-December | peak around Christmas and New Year |
The useful bits: both cities are on the same time zone (UTC+8), so there's no jet lag, and both use the same three-pin UK-style plug, so leave the adapter at home.
How do you plan a December trip to Singapore, step by step?
Book flights first, then a hotel in the right area, then fill your days around the afternoon rain. Here's the order that works.
1. Pick your dates by mid-November. If you're flexible, aim for 1 to 15 December, after the Singapore Marathon weekend if crowds bother you (the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon is usually held in early December; check the official site for the 2026 date). Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Scoot all fly the route, and you can search Hong Kong to Singapore flights to compare them side by side.
2. Choose the area before the hotel. Orchard is best if Christmas lights and shopping are the point. Marina Bay suits New Year's Eve, though you will pay heavily for it. Bugis and Lavender are cheaper and well connected by MRT.
If you want to step out of the lobby into the decorations, look at hotels around Orchard Road first. Book early: Orchard and Marina Bay rooms for the last ten days of December go fast.
3. Submit your SG Arrival Card. The SG Arrival Card is Singapore's free online arrival declaration, and it must be submitted within three days before you arrive, according to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), 2026. Do it on the ICA website or the MyICA app, never on a paid lookalike site.
4. Sort data before you land. Changi has free Wi-Fi, but you'll want maps and Grab working the moment you clear immigration. A travel eSIM for Singapore set up in Hong Kong saves hunting for a SIM counter.
5. Plan outdoor things for the morning. Gardens, zoo, walks and beaches before lunch; museums, malls and hawker centres when the storm rolls in around 3 or 4pm.
What is actually best in December?
- Orchard Road's Christmas light-up. Christmas on A Great Street usually switches on in mid-November and runs into early January. Walk it after dark from Tanglin to Dhoby Ghaut, ideally on a weeknight.
- Gardens by the Bay's festive events. A Christmas market and light display has run at Gardens by the Bay in most recent years. Check the Gardens by the Bay website for the 2026 dates and ticketing.
- Marina Bay on New Year's Eve. The countdown fireworks over Marina Bay are an annual fixture. Watch from the Esplanade or the Merlion Park side, and get there by early evening.
- Rainy-afternoon museums. National Gallery Singapore and the ArtScience Museum are made for 4pm thunderstorms. For a guided option on a dry morning, browse walking tours and things to do in Singapore, such as a Chinatown or Kampong Glam walk.
- Skip: Universal Studios Singapore in late December. School holidays plus tourists mean long queues and little shade when it does stop raining. Go in early December on a weekday, or not at all.
What do people get wrong about Singapore in December?
The most common mistake is treating December as a dry, mild winter month because it is in Hong Kong. Singapore's December is hot and wet, and a few predictable traps catch first-timers.
Packing for Hong Kong weather. Pack light, breathable clothes, sandals that cope with puddles, a compact umbrella and mosquito repellent (the National Environment Agency runs dengue awareness campaigns year round). Bring one light layer: malls, cinemas and the MRT are aggressively air-conditioned.
Booking the New Year hotel late. Marina Bay rooms with fireworks views are the first to sell out, and late bookings pay the most. If 31 December is the point of your trip, book in October or early November.
Forgetting the return leg. Everyone flies back to Hong Kong on 1 to 3 January before work restarts. If you're booking one way, check Singapore to Hong Kong flights for your return at the same time as the outbound.
Misreading menu prices. A "++" after a restaurant price means a 10% service charge plus GST on top. GST is 9%, according to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), 2024. Hawker centres don't add either, which is one more reason to eat at Maxwell or Lau Pa Sat.
Assuming everything closes on Christmas. Malls, hawker centres and attractions mostly stay open on 25 December. Some offices and smaller shops shut, but you won't go hungry.
Planning a full beach day. Sentosa's Siloso and Palawan beaches are fine in December, but a monsoon surge can wipe out a whole day. Keep beach plans flexible and have an indoor fallback.
So should you go to Singapore in December?
Yes, if you go between 1 and 15 December, book outdoor plans for mornings and accept a daily soaking. Late December is worth it only if Christmas lights or the Marina Bay fireworks are the whole reason for the trip, in which case book flights and hotel now and pay the peak price without complaining. If you want sunshine and lower prices, Singapore isn't going anywhere, and February after Chinese New Year is usually drier.
