Singapore in May 2027: Weather, Holidays and What to Do
A May trip to Singapore from Hong Kong either lands on the Labour Day long weekend at the start of the month, when both cities are on holiday and flights fill up, or in the quieter second half, when you get the same weather with less competition for seats and rooms. The second half wins for most readers: book a midweek departure after the first weekend of May and you sidestep the holiday rush without giving anything up.
May is a perfectly good month for Singapore, as long as you accept two things up front. It's one of the hottest months of the year, and the afternoons often end in a thunderstorm. Plan around both and May works well.
Know the May numbers before you book
Singapore in May typically sees daytime highs of around 31 to 33°C and night-time lows of around 25 to 26°C, with humidity that makes the air feel hotter than the thermometer says. That's climate norm territory, not a forecast, and there's very little variation from year to year.
May falls in what Meteorological Service Singapore calls the inter-monsoon period. That's the transition between the northeast and southwest monsoons, when winds are light and variable and the weather is driven by local heating. In practice that means clear, hot mornings, clouds building after lunch, and short, heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon or early evening. May rainfall in Singapore runs at roughly 150 to 200 mm in Meteorological Service Singapore's 1991 to 2020 climate averages, which is moderate by local standards rather than dry.
Daylight barely changes in Singapore, which sits just north of the equator. In May you get about 12 hours of it, with sunrise close to 7am and sunset close to 7pm. The sea off Sentosa and East Coast Park is bathwater warm, around 29 to 30°C, and the UV index regularly hits the very high or extreme band by late morning.
Holidays that move the dates
Three public holidays matter in May, and two of them shift every year:
- Labour Day is a public holiday in both Singapore and Hong Kong on 1 May. When it lands next to a weekend, both cities travel at once.
- Vesak Day is the Singapore public holiday marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so it moves, and in most years it falls in May.
- Hari Raya Haji is the Singapore public holiday for Eid al-Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice. It moves earlier by about 11 days each year and is expected to fall in May in 2027, but the exact day depends on the gazetted list.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) publishes Singapore's official public holiday dates, so check its list before you fix your dates. On the Hong Kong side, the Birthday of the Buddha is also a general holiday that usually lands in late April or May. Check the Hong Kong government's general holidays page for the 2027 date, because a long weekend at home pushes outbound demand up.
Hong Kong school holidays are on your side in May. Easter holidays are over by then, and the summer break doesn't start until July, so the month sits between the two busiest family travel windows.
Fares and hotel rates
Fares for May on the Hong Kong to Singapore route aren't tracked by singaporehongkong.com yet, so there's no site figure to quote for this month. The fare calendar on our flights page will show the cheapest month and day to fly once tracking covers this route. Until then, the pattern to expect is simple: holiday weekends cost more, midweek departures in the second half of May cost less.
May is a shoulder month for leisure travel in Singapore. It isn't peak like the year-end holidays or Chinese New Year, but Singapore hotels are pricey year-round, and a big conference at Marina Bay Sands Expo or Suntec can tighten rooms in the city centre for a few days. See what a first stay in Singapore costs for area-by-area context before you commit.
Plan your May trip step by step
The whole process takes about an hour of admin if you do it in the right order.
- Fix your dates against the holiday lists. Pull up MOM's Singapore holidays and the Hong Kong general holidays for 2027, then mark the long weekends. Aim for a Tuesday to Saturday or similar block in the second half of May.
- Book flights. Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines fly the route several times a day from Hong Kong International Airport to Changi, with low-cost options such as Scoot and HK Express alongside. You can compare flights from Hong Kong to Singapore across airlines before picking a slot; morning departures get you in for an afternoon storm, which is fine because you'll be checking in anyway.
- Check your entry paperwork. Hong Kong SAR passport holders can visit Singapore visa-free for short stays, but confirm the permitted length on the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) website. Every visitor must also submit the SG Arrival Card, ICA's free online arrival declaration, within the three days before you land.
- Pick your base. Chinatown is the pick for May if your dates cover Vesak Day, and it's close to Maxwell and Chinatown Complex hawker centres. Browse hotels in Chinatown and compare them with Bugis and Kampong Glam if you want lower rates with good MRT links.
- Sort your data. Your Octopus card does nothing in Singapore, but a contactless bank card or phone wallet works straight on the MRT and buses through SimplyGo. Set up a travel eSIM before you land at Changi so maps and ride-hailing work from the arrivals hall.
What's genuinely best in May
These are the things the May weather actually favours:
- Vesak Day evening in Chinatown. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple on South Bridge Road draws devotees for prayers and candlelit processions. Go after dark, dress modestly, and be respectful with your camera.
- Early-morning nature walks. The TreeTop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir and the Southern Ridges trail are at their best between 7am and 10am, before the heat builds. Check National Parks Board (NParks) for opening days, because the TreeTop Walk closes on some weekdays.
- Midday under glass. The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay are air-conditioned and built for exactly the hours when walking outside is miserable.
- Night Safari and hawker dinners. Singapore comes alive after sunset, and May evenings are warm but bearable. A guided evening at the Night Safari or a food tour through the hawker centres fits the rhythm of the month.
Skip the afternoon beach day on Sentosa. Between 1pm and 4pm the sun is brutal and that's precisely when storms roll in; go before 10am or not at all.
Avoid the classic May mistakes
The most common May mistake is treating Singapore like a hotter Hong Kong summer and planning full outdoor days. Singapore's heat is more relentless because nights barely cool down, so build every day around an indoor block from noon to 4pm.
A few others catch people out:
- Assuming the holiday dates. Vesak Day and Hari Raya Haji move each year, and the two cities' Buddhist holidays don't always land on the same day. Check both official lists rather than last year's calendar.
- Packing only for the heat. Singapore's malls, cinemas and MRT trains are cold. Pack breathable cotton or linen for outside, a light layer for indoors, a compact umbrella, sandals that cope with puddles, and high-SPF sunscreen.
- Forgetting the SG Arrival Card. It's free and takes minutes, but forgetting it slows you down at Changi's automated lanes.
- Expecting storms to wreck the day. May downpours are usually intense and short. Duck into a mall or hawker centre for half an hour and carry on.
- Worrying about haze. Transboundary haze from regional fires is mostly a risk later in the year, typically from around August to October. It's rarely a factor in May, though the National Environment Agency (NEA) publishes daily air quality readings if you want to check.

Compare Singapore and Hong Kong in May
Singapore in May is hotter and more consistently humid than Hong Kong, but Hong Kong is usually the wetter of the two that month. The table puts the climate norms side by side.
| May climate norms | Singapore | Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|
| Typical daytime high (°C) | 31 to 33 | 28 to 30 |
| Typical night-time low (°C) | 25 to 26 | 23 to 25 |
| Average May rainfall (mm) | roughly 150 to 200 | roughly 300 |
| Daylight (hours) | about 12 | about 13 |
| Sea temperature (°C) | 29 to 30 | 26 to 28 |
| Season | Inter-monsoon, afternoon storms | Start of rainy season |
The rainfall figures follow the 1991 to 2020 averages published by Meteorological Service Singapore and the Hong Kong Observatory. The practical upshot: you're swapping Hong Kong's long grey rainy spells for Singapore's short, sharp afternoon storms, which is a decent trade.
Decide on your May dates
Go in the second half of May 2027, midweek, once you've checked MOM's list for Vesak Day and Hari Raya Haji. If Vesak falls in your window, base yourself in Chinatown and plan your evening around it. If your only option is the 1 May long weekend, book early and expect to share the plane with half of Hong Kong. Either way, mornings outdoors, middays indoors, and evenings at a hawker centre is the formula for May.
