Singapore in September 2027: Weather, Events and Crowds
September is one of the better months to fly from Hong Kong to Singapore, and we'd book it over November or December without much hesitation. Singapore in September typically sees daytime highs of 31 to 32°C and nights of 25 to 26°C, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore's long-term climate normals, with short thunderstorms rather than the all-day rain of the Northeast Monsoon later in the year.
The month sits at the tail end of the Southwest Monsoon, the June to September season when winds blow from the Indian Ocean and rain tends to arrive in short bursts. There are no Singapore public holidays in September, which keeps local travel demand moderate. Two things can still wreck a trip: a race weekend at Marina Bay and a bad haze year. Both are covered below.
One honest gap first. singaporehongkong.com does not track fares on this route yet, so there's no September fare figure here, and we won't guess one.
September side by side
Singapore in September is hot, humid and fairly steady, while Hong Kong in September is wetter and still in peak typhoon season. The table uses typical climate ranges, not forecasts.
| Measure | Singapore | Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime high (°C) | 31 to 32 | 30 to 31 |
| Night low (°C) | 25 to 26 | 26 to 27 |
| Sea temperature (°C) | 29 to 30 | 27 to 28 |
| Rain pattern | Short showers, occasional pre-dawn squalls | Heavier, longer rain spells |
| Main weather risk | Haze in some years | Tropical cyclones (typhoon signals) |
| Sunset (local time) | About 19:00 to 19:10 | About 18:10 to 18:40 |
| Public holidays in September | None as a rule | Day after Mid-Autumn Festival |
The temperature gap is small. What changes is the storm risk: you're swapping typhoon worries for a smaller chance of haze, and Singapore keeps roughly 12 hours of daylight every day of the year.
The weather and crowds in practice
In practice, September weather in Singapore means hot mornings, sticky afternoons and a decent chance of one thunderstorm a day, often lasting under an hour. The Southwest Monsoon also brings Sumatra squalls, lines of storms that can sweep in before dawn or in the early morning with strong gusts, then clear by breakfast.
Humidity is the real story. It rarely drops much below uncomfortable, so plan outdoor walks before 10am or after 5pm and spend the middle of the day indoors, in museums, malls or a long hawker lunch under a fan.
Crowds are moderate. September is shoulder season for Singapore: no school summer rush from the northern hemisphere, no Lunar New Year, no year-end holidays. The Ministry of Education's one-week September school holiday, usually in the first half of the month, does fill Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore and the zoos, so check the MOE calendar if those are on your list.
Hotel rates follow events more than weather. A normal September week is reasonable by Singapore standards, which is to say not cheap. A Formula 1 weekend, if it lands in September, sends rates around Marina Bay and the Civic District sharply higher. Our hotel price guide for a first stay shows what a typical room runs to outside those spikes.
On the Hong Kong side, school is back from early September, so family demand drops. The exception is the Mid-Autumn Festival: the day after it is a Hong Kong general holiday, which in 2027 should be Thursday 16 September (confirm on the GovHK public holidays list). Many people take the Friday off and leave for a long weekend, and fares out of HKG rise around those dates. When we do track the route, the fare calendar on our flights page is where the cheapest month and day will show up.
Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Scoot all fly between Hong Kong International Airport and Singapore Changi, and the flight takes around four hours. If you want to compare carriers, search Hong Kong to Singapore flights for dates either side of the Mid-Autumn weekend and see how much leaving a day earlier saves.
The September plan
The best way to do Singapore in September is to book around the event calendar first, then the weather. Here's the order we'd do it in.
- Check the Formula 1 date. The Singapore Grand Prix is a night race on the Marina Bay Street Circuit. It ran in September for most of its history but has been held in early October in recent seasons, so check formula1.com for the 2027 date before you book anything.
- Decide on Mid-Autumn. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 15 September 2027, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. If you want the lanterns, arrive in the week before; Chinatown's light-up usually starts weeks ahead of the festival itself.
- Book flights and a room. Avoid departing HKG on the Wednesday or Thursday of the Mid-Autumn holiday if you're price sensitive.
- File the SG Arrival Card. The SG Arrival Card is Singapore's free online arrival declaration, which must be submitted within three days before arrival, according to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), 2026. Use the ICA website or the MyICA Mobile app, not a third-party site that charges a fee.
- Sort data before you land. Changi's free wifi is fine, but a working phone at the taxi rank matters for Grab. A travel eSIM for Singapore installed in Hong Kong is the low-effort option.
Now the fun part. These are the things that are genuinely best in September:
- Mid-Autumn in Chinatown. Lanterns strung along South Bridge Road and New Bridge Road, mooncake stalls, and the Chinatown night market in full swing. Staying nearby means you can walk it after dark; look at hotels around Chinatown, many within walking distance of Outram Park and Chinatown MRT.
- Gardens by the Bay after dark. Gardens by the Bay usually runs Mid-Autumn lantern displays, and the evening Garden Rhapsody light show at the Supertree Grove is free. Go at night, when it's a few degrees cooler and the Cloud Forest dome feels like air conditioning with plants.
- Early mornings on the Southern Ridges. The 10 km chain of trails from Mount Faber to Kent Ridge Park, including Henderson Waves, is lovely at 7.30am and miserable at noon. Squalls usually clear early, so start once the sky does.
- A night race weekend, but only if you're going. If F1 lands in September 2027 and you have tickets, it's one of the best city races on the calendar. If you don't, see the slip-ups below.
- Guided food walks. September evenings are made for hawker centres like Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat and Old Airport Road. A food tour or evening walk in Singapore is worth it on night one if you want someone to explain what to order.
One thing to skip: a dedicated Sentosa beach day. The sea is bath-warm at around 29°C, but the water off Siloso and Palawan is busy with shipping traffic and rarely clear, and the sand is baking by 11am. Spend that day at the Southern Ridges or Pulau Ubin instead.
The common slip-ups
The most common September mistake is booking a Marina Bay hotel on a Grand Prix weekend without realising it. Rates jump, roads around the Padang, Raffles Avenue and Esplanade Drive close for days, and some attractions inside the circuit shut or need a race ticket.
The second is ignoring haze. Transboundary haze from land and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan has hit Singapore in some Septembers, badly in 2015 and 2019. Most years are clear, but check the National Environment Agency's air quality readings at haze.gov.sg the week before you fly, especially if you have asthma.
The third works in the other direction: typhoons at your end. September is peak cyclone season for Hong Kong, and a Signal No. 8 from the Hong Kong Observatory can cancel or delay flights at HKG for a day or more. Book a fare you can change, and don't schedule a tight connection or a non-refundable tour on the morning you land.
A few smaller ones:
- Packing. Bring linen or quick-dry clothes, sandals that survive a downpour, a compact umbrella and sunscreen. Also pack a light layer, because MRT trains, malls and cinemas run their air conditioning cold.
- Assuming a holiday means cheaper. Singapore has no September public holidays, but its school break still fills family attractions for a week.
- Driving. A car makes little sense in a city with this good an MRT. Car hire in Singapore only pays off if you're heading over the causeway to Johor, and then check your rental terms allow it.
If September doesn't fit, our guide to Singapore in November covers the start of the wetter monsoon season.
The verdict
Go. Aim for the week before Mid-Autumn, roughly 8 to 14 September 2027, to catch the lanterns without paying Hong Kong long-weekend fares, and confirm the F1 date before you commit to a hotel near Marina Bay. Pack for heat and short storms, keep an eye on the haze readings and the Hong Kong Observatory, and you'll get one of Singapore's steadier months at shoulder-season prices.
